“Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.” – Roger Caras

I’m a dog lover for many reasons including the fact that they bring happiness, playfulness, and can enhance and prolong their people’s lives. There are several days set aside to celebrate them (Hug Your Dog Day, Golden Retriever Day, etc.) because they can be so good for us. On these days and every day, we can celebrate not only these lovable furballs but also what they teach us about living a happier, healthier life. All pets bring benefits–even fish can lower their people’s blood pressure!–but Golden Retrievers are one of my favorite animals. Golden retrievers in particular are known for their sunny dispositions, loyalty, and unconditional love, qualities we can all aspire to embody. Let’s explore the myriad benefits of having pets and how adopting a ‘golden retriever attitude’ can positively impact our mental and emotional wellbeing. Let’s dive into a world where every tail wag and furry cuddle holds a lesson in joy!

Here’s what the research has to say:

  1. The Calming Effect of Pets:
    • A study by Karen Allen at the State University of New York found that being with pets can lower blood pressure and reduce stress.
    • Consider spending time with a pet to unwind and relax.
  2. Joyful Attitude & Overall Well-being:
    • Research by Sonja Lyubomirsky at the University of California shows that maintaining a positive outlook can lead to better health and longer life.
    • Adopting a ‘golden retriever attitude’ means approaching life with optimism and joy.
  3. Pets and Social Support:
    • According to a study by the University of Portsmouth, pet owners are more likely to form social connections in their community.
    • Pets can be a bridge to building stronger social ties.
  4. Physical Activity Through Pet Ownership:
    • A Michigan State University study found that dog owners are more likely to meet physical activity guidelines.
    • Regular walks or playtime with pets can enhance your fitness regime.
  5. Pets and Mental Health:
    • Research by the University of British Columbia highlights that pets can alleviate feelings of loneliness and depression.
    • Engaging with pets can provide emotional support and companionship.

There are several more ways we can channel our inner Golden Retrievers to live happier, fuller, and even longer lives. Try some of these and see how you feel:

  1. Adopt a Pet: They bring joy and companionship into your life. Just like most Golden Retrievers never meet a dog (or cat) they don’t like, we can make pets a greater part of our lives and live longer because of it.
  2. Practice Optimism: Having a positive outlook on life can lead to health benefits as well as greater success in life. Like golden retrievers, look for the good in every situation.
  3. Engage in Daily Physical Activity: One of my favorite parts of having dogs is the exercise and fun they bring into my life. Walks or playtime with pets can be fun and healthy for everyone.
  4. Cultivate Social Connections: Use pet-related activities to meet new people. Dog parks, volunteering, and even walks around the neighborhood can help you get connected with other pet lovers.
  5. Practice Mindfulness: Observe your pet’s ability to live in the moment. This is good for humans, too. (Here’s more about the benefits of meditation and mindfulness.)
  6. Offer Kindness and Affection Freely: Emulate your pet’s unconditional love. Let people know you care bout them, what you appreciate about them, and that you care, and you’ll strengthen your relationships and social support.
  7. Take Breaks for Play: Incorporate playfulness into your daily routine. It doesn’t need to be tag, catch, or chase, of course; you can play online games, card games, or be playful in whatever ways work best for you.
  8. Seek Comfort in Nature: Spend time outdoors with your pet. (Remember, time outside can bring great benefits for stress and overall wellness.)
  9. Smile More Often: Embrace the joy and simplicity of a pet’s smile. Just the act of smiling can stave off stress and connect you to others.
