Frequently Asked Questions

How Is Coaching Different From Therapy?

Because both focus on awareness and personal growth, there are many ways that the two overlap, and they can also work well in tandem. However, generally speaking, therapy often focuses on diagnosing, healing, and addressing psychological issues from the past. It aims to understand and resolve deep-seated emotional problems and mental health conditions.

In contrast, coaching focuses more on the present and future, helping clients set and achieve personal and professional goals as well as personal well-being. It may address developing healthier mental and physical habits, gaining awareness of personal obstacles, and implementing strategies to overcome them. It aims to enhance performance, develop skills, and foster personal and professional growth.

If you are dealing with unresolved emotional issues, trauma, or mental health conditions, seeking therapy with a licensed professional is crucial. However, if you are looking to enhance your personal or professional life, set and achieve goals, gain awareness of and overcome obstacles, or improve productivity and well-being, coaching could be an excellent fit.

What Makes Dr. Scott's Approach Unique?

My approach combines evidence-based techniques from positive psychology, stress management, and productivity enhancement, tailored to each client's unique needs. With over 20 years of experience, a PhD in psychology, and a PCC-level coaching certification, I provide a holistic and personalized coaching experience. My methods are designed to not only help you achieve your goals but also to build resilience, enhance well-being, and foster long-term success.

What Are Some Benefits of Coaching?

Research-based benefits of coaching include:

* Improved Goal Achievement: Coaching helps you set clear, actionable goals and develop a roadmap to achieve them. I have proprietary systems that are based on research that shows real benefits, or we can take a more fluid approach that's led by what you are currently facing.

* Enhanced Self-Awareness: Through reflective practices and feedback, coaching increases self-awareness, helping you to better understand your strengths and areas for growth. I have several assessments that can help identify your personal strengths and challenges and help point to new directions tailored for you.

* Increased Motivation and Accountability: Regular coaching sessions provide motivation and hold you accountable, ensuring you stay on track. Research shows that when you simply write down a goal, you are almost 50% more likely to actually achieve it--imagine having that boost as well as professional support at your back as you move toward your goals.

* Better Stress Management: Coaching offers techniques to manage stress effectively, leading to improved mental and physical health. I wrote the book on this (literally)!

* Greater Work-Life Balance: By setting priorities and managing time effectively, coaching helps you achieve a better balance between work and your personal life. You can finally actually do those things you keep wanting to do!

Should I Choose Coaching, Courses, or Workbooks?

It all depends on what you're looking for, what your budget is, and what you're trying to create for yourself. Many people can make real changes with a workbook or self-led course. Others do better with the support of a coaching package where I work directly with you to help you reach goals you have, and we can tailor the approach to your specific personality and needs. For others, a coaching group or larger course with coaching support is the perfect blend of structure and support at a lower price. It's up to you! (If you're not sure, you can contact me or schedule a Clarity Call where we can discuss what would be the best fit.)

What Can I Expect From Coaching With Dr. Scott?

In a coaching session, you can expect:

  • Personalized Attention: Although I have a proprietary framework based on research and results, each session is tailored to your unique needs and goals.
  • Goal Setting: We will set clear, actionable goals and develop a plan to achieve them.
  • Practical Strategies: I will provide evidence-based strategies and tools to help you overcome obstacles and stay on track.
  • Support and Accountability: We'll have regular check-ins to monitor progress, provide support, and hold you accountable.
  • Confidentiality: All sessions are private, providing a safe space for you to discuss your challenges and aspirations.

How Long Does It Take To See Results?

The timeline for seeing results from coaching (or courses, workshops, and other things I offer) varies depending on individual goals and commitment. Some clients may notice improvements after a single session or within a few sessions, while others may require a longer period to fully achieve their goals. Consistency and active participation in the coaching process are key factors in realizing results.

How Are Individual and Group Coaching Different?

Individual Coaching: One-on-one sessions focused on your specific goals and needs. Provides personalized attention and tailored strategies.

Group Coaching: Sessions with a small group of individuals working towards similar goals. Offers a supportive community, shared experiences, and collaborative learning.

Both options have unique benefits, and the choice depends on your preferences and goals. There are also a few other options:

Challenges: Here, I share some research-based information on an area of personal development (like developing an optimal morning routine, meditation practice, or mindset shift) and different ways to put these into practice in your life, and then challenge you to do just that, with the support of the group to cheer you on.

Course With Group Coaching: I offer structured courses that usually span four to eight weeks that share research-based information and simple-to-implement practices to lead you through a change involving increasing awareness, developing new habits, and finding support to reach a goal. These combine group coaching, learning, challenges, and (for "VIP"s) individual coaching to give structure and support for optimal growth.

What Are The Costs Associated With Coaching?

The cost of coaching varies based on the type and duration of the coaching package. I offer a range of options, including individual sessions, packages, and group workshops, to fit different budgets. Some resources, such as my Gratitude and Wins Journal, my articles, and blog posts (as well as some webinars that I share in my newsletters), are available for free.
